history

Joseph Pilates

from to 1883 to 1967

Created a method built on precision, stretch, control and mindful movement - a system designed to strengthen the body from the inside out. His vision was simple yet revolutionary : move with intention, breath with purpose, and restore balance between body and mind.

He arrived in New York in the 1920s, he brought with him a revolutionary vision of movement and wellbeing. In his small studio on Eighth Avenue, above the bustling city streets and next to the dance studios of Martha Graham and George Balanchine, he refined what he called Contrology: a method designed to build a strong, flexible, and fully integrated body.

Dancers, athletes, and everyday New Yorkers quickly discovered the transformative power of his work. His studio became a heaven, a place where precision discipline, and mindful movement helped people move without pain, stand taller, breath better, and regain control of their bodies.

Joseph Pilates’ legacy was carried forward by romana Kryzanowska, on of his most devoted protégées.

romana kryzanowska

from to June 30, 1923 to August 30, 2013

A talented young dancer.

Romana discovered Joseph Pilates thanks to George Balanchine after an injury threatened her career. Joseph immediately recognized her discipline and natural understanding of movement, taking her under his wing. She became one of his most devoted protégées, training closely with him for decades and absorbing the full depth of his original work.

After Joseph and Clara passed away, Romana carried his legacy with unmatched dedication, preserving the method exactly as she had learned it.

Her commitment led to the creation of Romana’s Pilates International, a global organization that continues to transmit the authentic, classical Pilates method through rigorous teacher training and a worldwide network of certified instructors, carried today by her daughter Sari Mejia Santo and grand daughter Daria Pace,
